Katalin PARTI (OKRI): Anti-bullying programs: Obstacles in implementing best practices in Hungary

This paper will discuss the ’best practices’ that can be gleaned from the evaluation research into five bullying prevention programs running in the U.S.: the (1) Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP), (2) Positive Action (PA), (3) Second Step (SS) and Second Step: Student Success Through Prevention Middle School Program (SS-SSTP) (Committee for Children), (4) Steps To Respect (STR) (Committee for Children), and (5) KiVa, an anti-bullying program developed in Finland.

In the second half of the paper I will talk about the problems that might occur when adapting a program in a country or region different from the one where the program was developed. Key elements of the paper include:

·         The question of cultural adaptability:

·         Definitions of bullying and cyberbullying are not always consistent, they may vary by legislative system and educational system.

·         Schools’ attitude in managing off-campus conflicts can be very different by school system or district management.

·         Educational philosophy: Whether the applied conflict management strategies are consistent with the proposed program’s philosophy. E.g. Is so called Prussian education system in Central Europe compatible with the bullying / cyberbullying conflict management strategies applied by the programs at stake?

·         The question of school leadership. Whether schools’ leadership follows the schools’ actual needs. E.g. If there the directorate of schools is centralized, it might not really meet the local needs.

·         Low level of motivation can disrupt participation and level of involvement in programs. E.g. Low motivational level can be derived from the inadequate credit system, ’life career model’, low salaries, lack of staff, lack of school professionals’ school psychologists, prevention officers etc.

·         Inconsistency in the education of school staff: If BA programs do not prepare school staff with basic knowledge of conflict management, psychology, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), digital skills (DS) etc., they might not even be prepared for special trainings in bullying and cyberbullying.

·         The actual level of deprivation in a society can disrupt program participation level. In countries where social deprivation is at high level, such as in Central European post communist countries, parents and community are likely not motivated enough to give in such prevention and conflict management programs as anti-bullying and anti-cyberbullying ones.

·         The question of legal preparedness: Even though the legal system covers different bullying and cyberbullying acts, the judicial system might still not be prepared to handle such cases.

István SZAKADÁT (BME): A nómenklatúra modellje - Hungarian language lecture

A lexikografikus preferencia fogalma viszont gyakran használt mind a közgazdaságtan, mind a cselekvéselmélet területén (utóbbi világban a weberi értékracionalitás értelmében), ami meglepő összefüggések keresésére sarkallhat minket.

Dániel HORN (MTA KRTK KTI): Educational selection and inequality – a research proposal

Selecting students into homogeneous schools increases differences between students. While this statement is itself debated by many, the underlying mechanisms behind are even less clear. The literature argues, in short, that peers, teachers and other school factors (curriculum, physical resources, organization of classes etc.) make the difference between a good school and a bad one. Students that are allocated to the good schools win, while those in bad schools lose. If the quality of schools associates with the status of the family, inequalities increase. This project aims at adding new (large N administrative and survey based) quantitative as well as experimental evidence on the initial puzzle – whether selection is bad – as well as on the mechanisms that (could) drive this result (e.g. How do peers matter? Why some teachers are better than the others?). The different work packages of this research proposal examine the role of peers, the role of teachers and the role of (some of) the school factors. The novelty of this research is that it not only provides evidence on the causal effects of selection on different outcomes using advanced econometric techniques as well as field experiments but it also digs deeper to find the potential mechanisms by using laboratory experiments. Using laboratory experiments we aim at uncovering the potential driving force behind educational performance of individual students and groups of students.

Gergely TÓTH (ELTE): The impacts of the spatial embeddedness on sociological analysis

In my presentation I deal with the sociologically relevant theoretical and statistical consequences resulting from the spatial structure of society. I attempt to show how space is present in sociological data and, through this, what role it plays with regard to the methods applied. On the first part of the lecture I will briefly discuss some relevant theories, and I will summarize the most important statistical methods concerned with analysing of the data through spatial patterns.

On the second half of the presentation I will show results of some simulations developed by me, which are able to point out the effects of the spatial phenomenon for the survey like data.

László GULYÁS (ELTE): An Estimation of the Shortest and Largest Average Path Length in Graphs of Given Density

Many real world networks (graphs) are observed to be 'small worlds', i.e., the average path length among nodes is small. On the other hand, it is somewhat unclear what other average path length values networks can produce. In particular, it is not known what the maximum and the minimum average path length values are. In this paper we provide a lower estimation for the shortest average path length (l) values in connected networks, and the largest possible average path length values in networks with given size and density. To the latter end, we construct a special family of graphs and calculate their average path lengths. We also demonstrate the correctness of our estimation by simulations.

Michael SZELL (Northeastern University, Center for Complex Network Research): Conflict and cooperation in large social networks

In recent years, the availability of large-scale data sets about entire social systems has enabled a novel computational social science approach to the study of social phenomena, utilizing tools and methods from data mining, complex systems, and network science. Using this approach, I first present our analysis of a complete, multi-relational, social network of a society consisting of over 400,000 players of a self-developed massive multiplayer online game where information about all player interactions over several years is available. We focus on the role of negative ties and negative social dynamics, and investigate social balance, triadic closure, and gender differences. Second, I explore the interplay between social loafing and social facilitation effects in cooperative work in a few million development teams on the social coding platform Github. Finally, we call attention to some of the open questions in the field, including mixed reciprocity and dynamics in signed networks.

Balázs SZIKLAI (MTA KRTK KTI): Ki roma, ki zsidó? - A csoportidentifikációs probléma játékelméleti szemszögből - Hungarian language lecture
