Gender Differences in the Effects of Subjective Feedback – a Computer Game-Based Experiment
The main question of our research project is whether there are gender differences in the effect of positive subjective feedback - praise and encouragement - on effort and performance. We develop a simple model based on goal-setting theory, in which subjective feedback affects the choice of effort through both the updating of expected performance and direct utility from a pleasant environment. Gender differences in self-confidence and environmental preferences can then lead to differences in effort by feedback type. We test this using a computer game, to be played by random online users and in classroom experiments, during which players are randomly chosen to be given either no feedback or positive feedback. We then compare the relative difference in the effort and performance of those who received no feedback and those who received positive feedback by gender. The effect will be analyzed over different age groups and countries, revealing age and culture-related aspects.
